Thumbs Up:

Component quality: The card illustration is excellent. Both character portraits and landscapes are literally works of art.

Setup time: The time you need to setup a quest depends on the type of quest that you choose to play, but in general it is quite brief. Equally brief is the time you will need to pack the game after completing the quest.

Luck vs strategy: Strategy prevails in this game, but luck is not entirely absent, adding the elements of surprise and unexpected to the game.

Interaction: Collaboration between players is one of the key features of the game. Players will need to work together continuously to commonly decide on their strategy in order to successfully complete the quests.

Game Mechanics: Escaping from the known and repeated techniques used in card games - either Trading Card Games, or Living Card Games- The Lord of the Rings the Card Game is a pleasant novelty, as players are not opponents, but cooperate against the game.

Downtime: Due to the ongoing cooperation between the players the time that you will not participate in the game is literally none.

Replayability: The core set of the game includes three quests and four sets of player cards. These alone are enough to make the game fun and interesting for quite a long time. Beyond that though, the Lord of the Rings the Card Game is a Living Card Game, which means that it has monthly expansions and is thus constantly updated and evolving.

Thumbs Down:

Difficulty: The Lord of the Rings the Card Game is quite a difficult game for novice players, which is inevitable for a game with such a high level of strategy, immense depth options, with lots of expansions and continuous and effective cooperation.

Component Quality: Once again we face the same problem as with the rest of the games of this company. Although the component quality is high, the box is not properly configured to store its contents, something which can be solved relatively easily, but still, remains annoying.

Final Verdict:

The Lord of the Rings the Card Game could rank as top option in several game categories, such as Middle Earth themed games, card games, strategy games, cooperative games etc. If you like one of these categories, then surely this game will become one of your favorites and as it is a Living Card Game, it will be your favorite game for a long time.

Who is it for:

Family Gamer: Maybe. Couples and families who have played card games, Trading Card Games, or other Living Card Games before and are fans of JRR Toklien or fantasy topics in general will enjoy this game.

Social Gamer: No. The game is pretty tough with explicit rules, and the number of players who can play the game is limited; thus it is not a good option for social gamers.
Strategy Gamer: Maybe. While the Lord of the Rings the Card Game is not a competitive game, it requires a fairly high level of strategy.

Hobby Gamer: Yes. A game that the players in this category will surely love. An important factor for that is that the Lord of the Rings the Card Game is a game that one can play even alone.
Hardcore Gamer: Yes. The core game might not be particularly impressive for that category of players, but the depth and variety of options that the game features especially with the addition and use of expansions will surely captivate hardcore players.
