Travel to Victorian Britain and participate in some of the cases of the famous investigator Serlock Holmes. “I Say Holmes!” is a game where players make their own story using their cards, while at the same time try to investigate each case.
Number of players: 3-8
Average duration: 45'
Gameplay: A quite interesting characteristic of the game is the fact that there are three different ways to collect victory points (Making an arrestment, helping a criminal to escape, or simply collecting "I say” tokens) and that’s an advantage concerning the variety of the game and something that makes it far more interesting in terms of gameplay.
Component Quality: Although the game’s illustration is not impressive, it ranges in quite high levels and manages not only to be in perfect harmony with the theme but also to add something both to the game’s atmosphere and topic. The component quality in both the cards and various game tokens ranges in a slightly lower quality, however guarantee durability.
Interaction: The interaction among the players is one of the main characteristics of the game. Every time you play, you instantly influence the next player as the cards consist of a list of choices about which of them can be played right after the active card in order for the story to be continued. Also, you will constantly try to understand who keeps in his hand a criminal card in order to arrest him or correspondingly, if the criminal is you, you will try not to raise suspicions so as to escape.
Downtime: The game evolves very fast, with the exception of some specific cases, as every player in their round just choose to play one of their cards, which has to stick with the story and then it’s the next player’s turn.
Gameplay: Although it is printed on the box that the game can be played by three to eight players, when there are three players there isn’t enough space for the game mechanics to function correctly and the game doesn’t really evolve in an interesting manner.
Setup time: According to the number of players, every time you will have to separate the starting cards from a 125 card deck, a fact that makes the setup time very tiring.
I Say Holmes! is an excellent game for a big company, which without making its theme come out in the game perfectly, it manages to be in great harmony with it and to create the right atmosphere. Certainly it can’t be characterized as Party Game, since its depth and complexity range to much higher levels than other games of the same category.
Who is it for:
Family Gamer: Maybe. The theme as well as the whole gameplay will certainly satisfy the players of this category. However, the fact that it is a game played better with lots of players, it might repel some of them.
Social Gamer: Maybe. That’s the category to which the game corresponds, however some players might find it very complicated.
Strategy Gamer: Maybe. Although strategy is part of the game, it’s not its main characteristic.
Hobby Gamer: Maybe. The contents as well as the gameplay will fully satisfy without exciting the players of this category.
Hardcore Gamer: No. The lack of immediate competition as well as the quite easy and fast gameplay won’t draw the attention of that category players’.
